The festival for this temple is taken place every year around the time of Diwali. During this season a important thing to be noted is the offering of  Paniyaram ( A South Indian Dish) to the kankatchi amman goddess. On this occassion people gathers in front of the temple, setting a big stove and keep a vessel filled with cooking oil on it to make the Paniyaram. Once the paniyaram is cooked, the priest in the temple will take it out using his both hands with out any burns in his hands, After than the people who had fasting on a certain period before the occasion would do the same as like priest.

Another wonder is that the priest would lit the light with water instead of oil. He will go to the sea shore of mayakulam and get some water and pour it into the Light and make it lighted.

For seeing these wonders, people in and around mayakulam village will rush together. After the function is over, people will be served with good food. This is the main function which must be seen by every individuals at Kankatchi amman Temple.

There are two main roads in kilakarai, among that the road goes from mukku road to the beach is the biggest road in kilakarai and another main road is the one which diverts to bustand. Both of the roads are medium level roads. A bus and a auto can surpass on the road and the road has few potholes. Nearby kilakarai market, the road would be always blocked by people in kilakarai.

Kilakarai Roads
Kilakarai Roads

There are more sands and stones found in almost all of the roads in kilakarai streets. Many vehicles are skidding on the roads because of the clusters of sands on the road.

People in kilakarai are expecting that the kilakarai municipality has to take some measures in removing the sand clusters and stones on the roads. Also the speed breakers are very less near schools and hospitals that causes minor accidents to the school going kids in a periodical time gap.

Meaning of kilakarai

Why Kilakarai is being called as Kilakarai

Name kilakarai is self explanatory if you know Tamil language (தமிழ்).

In Early decades, people in and around Ramanathapuram had commodity to commodity exchange with srilankan people. They had their starting place at the east-end of the Ramanathapuram district, From there they would start moving to srilanka with their boats with goods.
On a fixed occasional day, people in and around Ramanathapuram area would go into the middle of the sea and at the same time certain people from srilanka would move towards the middle of the sea to interchange the  available goods in their respective places. People in ramanathapuram area had defined a spot to start their boat sailing, As the spot is at the east-end, they started calling it as kilakku Karai. As the people started pronouncing the name for decades, the seperate words got overlapped and changed it as "kilakarai". This is how kilakarai crowned its name.

Weather in kilakarai

Kilakarai is aligned with a dry tropical climate with an average annual rainfall of 90 cm from North East monsoon  during October to January. In early 90s,  this area would get good rainfall, starting from October to the mid of December but these days rain starts from November and ends in December, rest of the months will be the hot summer. People would feel mere sultry in the month of April, may and June. Morning to evening the heavy sunlight would  create enough heat over the landscape and in the evening a little breeze would help to overcome the heat. People will think twice to go out for work in the summer.

People likes to have tender-coconut, butter-milk and cool drinks to reduce their body temperature in summer.

Kilakarai people could bear the hot summer but not the rainy season, because during rainy season most of the street would be logged with drains, that cause many diseases for the people who walk in that drains. Many ditches and pits will be created and will not be taken care by the municipality members/ward councilors.
